Rowing Programme > Introduction

High-level oarsmen

Reading University Boat Club aim to continue attract experienced oarsmen to develop and increase the success of the university boat club at senior level. This section of the web site details the resources we currently have and what is being added to them constantly. The club has the facilities to support the most distinguished junior oarsmen whether coming from top club or school level as they make their way onto Under 23 and Senior level.

The club regularly attract top-level oarsman, but RUBC more regularly produce those who go onto notable levels within the sport.

Present members of RUBC include: Sam Townsend,(GB 4x 2007), Alex Gregory (GB 4x 2007)Tash Page (GB W2- 2007), Bill Lucas (GB U23 2x 2007), Charles Cousins (GB U23 2x 2007), Atlanta St John (GB U23 W4x 2007), Phil Turnham (GB M8+ at 2007 European Champsionships) and Charles Burkitt (Leander Club, GB U23 2- 2007). Although Alex and Tash have now graduated, they still represent the club at events such as the fours and eights head, and Tash especially is very active coaching club members. Their continued commitment to the club is greatly appreciated, and their willingness to continue to race for RUBC prooves the club's competative edge.

At senior level RUBC have a men’s and a women’s senior squad. The 'standard' senior squads have very high aspirations, and take on between 10-14 sessions per week to achieve their aims at Henley and BUSA. Recent strong results at the 2007 Fours Head, and 2007 BUSA Small Boats Head (4 Silver Medals), prooves that the club is not solely reliant on its high performance members for success.

Past members include Nick Strange (GB lightweight who won the Visitors Challenge Cup with Reading University BC at Henley Royal Regatta in 1986) and Debbie Flood (Leander and Great Britain Olympic Sliver medalist in Athens 2004.) who graduated in 2005.

Other ex-members of RUBC all now Leander Club members include: Rick Egington (GB 8+ 2007), Will Suthers (Member of the 2003 Great Britain Lightweight Eight and President of RUBC in 1999-2000), Will Rand (Winner of the Wyfold Challenge Cup at Henley Royal Regatta in 2001 and Captain of RUBC in 1997-98) and Tim Beddingfield.

Those new to Rowing

However, the club also run a structured beginners or ‘novice’ programme that concentrates resources on those who express the motivation, physical abilities and attitude to achieve what it takes. RUBC are lucky to work in union with the officers from the World First Class Start programme in identifying and developing talent.

As part of a new programme this year, the boat club are interested in hearing from anyone who has participated seriously in any sport, whether from 1st’s level at school to international level, who would like to have the opportunity to, with a little hard work, become a successful university oarsman. We are looking for people with mental strength, fitness and perseverance to overcome adversity.

We can offer professional coaching, equipment and training. We can offer our time to support you. All the club need are sportsmen and women who are enthusiastic and motivated to use these facilities in order to become a success. Reading University BC is a professional club, with serious aims. However it is also a friendly, sociable and inviting club.
